IP address and network range

An IP address identifies an endpoint within an allocated network range. The registry or routing record may show CIDR, network name and type. A range can be reassigned, announced by another provider or used behind a CDN, so treat it as network context rather than a person identity.

ASN and organization

An autonomous system number identifies a network that announces routes under a common routing policy. The organization, ISP and ASN fields can come from different sources and may use different labels. They describe network operation, not necessarily the company that owns a website.

Reverse DNS and PTR

A PTR record maps an IP address to a hostname chosen by the address holder. It is useful for mail and operational checks, but it does not list every domain hosted on the IP and the hostname may be generic.

Geolocation is approximate

IP geolocation estimates a country, region or city from database and network signals. Mobile networks, VPNs, proxies, CDNs, Anycast and corporate gateways can make the estimate differ from a user or server’s physical location.

What IP lookup can and cannot prove

It can help compare a domain’s current address with an expected provider, inspect registration data and find a reverse DNS name. It cannot prove who is using the address, identify a precise person or show a complete inventory of virtual hosts.

A practical reading workflow

Start with the IP and whether it is public. Read the network range and ASN together, then compare organization and ISP labels, check PTR, review approximate location and confirm important conclusions with the network operator or hosting provider.

Privacy and responsible use

Public IP information should be used for systems you are authorized to inspect. Avoid treating approximate location as personal data certainty, and do not use lookup results to target private networks or infer sensitive personal details.
