Start with the question you need answered

WHOIS and RDAP are mainly about registration or registry objects; DNS is about how a name currently resolves. Ask whether you need registrar and expiry information, a structured registry object, or live routing and mail records before choosing a lookup. One service cannot replace the others.

What WHOIS can show

WHOIS is often free-form text from a registry or registrar server. It may include registrar, creation and expiry dates, status, nameservers and abuse contacts. Formats differ, fields can be redacted and a response may combine registry and registrar information. Treat raw text as source evidence, not a guaranteed uniform schema.

What RDAP adds

RDAP is an HTTP-based, structured service for registration data. It provides standardized objects, fields, links and event timestamps, which makes automation and comparison easier. The visible data still depends on the registry, registrar, regional registry and privacy rules. RDAP is not a DNS resolver and does not prove where a website is hosted.

What DNS answers

DNS returns records currently published for a name, including A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS and SOA. It answers routing, delegation, mail and verification questions. DNS does not prove ownership, registration status or who operates the service behind an address. Resolver caches and TTL affect what a user sees.

Why the three results can differ

A domain can have live DNS records while registration contacts are privacy-redacted. Registration data may show nameservers that have not propagated through recursive DNS, and WHOIS or RDAP updates can occur at different times. A DNS record can also point to a CDN or shared network without identifying the registrant.

Use a repeatable comparison workflow

Start with the registrable domain, then query WHOIS and RDAP and compare registrar, status, events and nameservers. Query DNS for NS, A, AAAA, MX and TXT, compare authoritative and recursive answers, and use IP Lookup or HTTPS Diagnostics only for the current network and service path. Record query times because public data changes.

Understand privacy and data limits

Privacy protection may hide names, emails, addresses or registrar details. Public lookup tools do not bypass redaction and a missing field is not proof that no person or organization exists. An IP address does not identify a precise person or list every virtual host. Verify sensitive conclusions with the relevant registrar, registry or provider.

Choose the right source for incidents

Use WHOIS or RDAP for registration status, expiry, registrar and registry objects; use DNS for delegation, addresses, mail and verification; use IP Lookup for network context; use HTTPS Diagnostics for the public response path. For important decisions, the authoritative registry, registrar, DNS provider or hosting operator remains the final source.

Common misconceptions and safety

WHOIS does not prove hosting location, RDAP is not automatically newer than every WHOIS response, DNS does not prove ownership and an IP lookup is not a complete inventory of domains. Query only public data and systems you are authorized to inspect; do not submit credentials or private registration information.
